About Scottish AI Lessons

We are building the AI tutor that Scottish students deserve — one that understands SQA marking schemes, adapts to every learner, and costs less than a single tutoring session.

See It In Action

Our Mission

Every Scottish student deserves access to high-quality, personalised maths tutoring. Right now, that access depends on geography and family income. A student in Edinburgh can choose from hundreds of private tutors. A student in a rural Highland community may have none. Even in cities, private tutoring at £30-50 per hour is out of reach for many families.

Scottish AI Lessons exists to close that gap. We provide adaptive, one-to-one maths tutoring powered by AI — available 24/7, from any device, for £4.99 a month. Our AI understands the SQA curriculum because it was built for the SQA curriculum. It is not a generic maths bot with a Scottish label. Every lesson, every practice question, and every piece of feedback is aligned to the specific course specifications and marking instructions that SQA publishes.

We believe that AI should augment teachers, not replace them. Our platform gives teachers real-time data on each student's mastery and misconceptions, freeing classroom time for the human connection that no AI can replicate.

How the Technology Works

Scottish AI Lessons is built on LangGraph, an open-source framework for building stateful, multi-step AI agents. Unlike simple chatbots that respond to one message at a time, our teaching agent maintains a full model of the student's learning state — which outcomes they have mastered, where they struggle, and what to teach next.

The teaching loop follows evidence-based pedagogy. Each lesson card presents a concept, checks for understanding, provides scaffolded hints if needed, and only advances when the student demonstrates genuine mastery. This mirrors the "I do, we do, you do" approach used by effective classroom teachers.

SQA marking scheme integration is what sets us apart. Our AI has been trained on official marking instructions from every available past paper. When it marks a student's work, it applies the same criteria an SQA examiner would — awarding method marks for correct processes even when the final answer is wrong, and flagging where communication marks would be lost.

Adaptive difficulty uses a mastery-based progression model. The system tracks competence at the individual outcome level (not just by unit or topic) and adjusts the difficulty and frequency of practice accordingly. Spaced repetition ensures previously mastered topics are periodically revisited to prevent forgetting.

Why Scotland Specifically?

Scotland has its own education system, its own qualifications authority (SQA), and its own curriculum (Curriculum for Excellence). Generic AI tutoring tools built for GCSE or A-Level do not align with Scottish qualifications. The content is different, the assessment structure is different, and the marking schemes are different.

By focusing exclusively on the Scottish curriculum, we deliver a product that is genuinely useful rather than broadly mediocre. Our coverage spans National 3 through Advanced Higher Mathematics, with every lesson tied to specific SQA course codes and outcome references.

Scotland also has a particular need. Rural communities face teacher shortages, and maths is consistently one of the hardest subjects to recruit for. AI tutoring does not solve the teacher recruitment crisis, but it can ensure that every student has access to high-quality maths support regardless of where they live or which school they attend.

Our Values

Honesty Over Hype

AI is a tool, not magic. We are transparent about what our platform can and cannot do. We publish our limitations alongside our features.

Accessibility First

We design for students with additional support needs from day one — dyslexia-friendly fonts, plain language mode, extra time, and high contrast are not afterthoughts.

Teacher Partnership

We build for teachers, not against them. Our dashboards give educators actionable data. Our platform handles drill and practice so teachers can focus on inspiration.

Privacy by Design

Student data is processed under UK GDPR with strict data minimisation. We never sell data and we never use student work to train AI models without explicit consent.

Get In Touch

We would love to hear from teachers, parents, and students. Whether you have a feature request, a question about the platform, or want to discuss a school partnership, reach out at hello@scottishailessons.com.
